A chemical peel is a caustic acid that is applied to the skin causing the top layer to burn and then slough off. Alpha Hydroxy Acids [AHA] is derived from sugars which is why you see words like fruit acids, lactic, and malic attached to it. This is the mildest type of peel fondly referred to as the lunch time peel. It is a good choice for skin pigmentation issues, sunspots, light sun damage, and some acne.

Beta Hydroxy Acids [BHA] is oil based making it extremely effective for bacteria type problems such as dermatitis or psoriasis. Like AHA, it is mild and has a very short healing time.

Trichloaroacetic Acid [TCA] is a medium depth peel which get down to the dermis meaning the results will last longer and it will treat more skin conditions. Healing can be two weeks or more depending on the treatment. It is good for all types of acne, scars, lightening tattoos, skin damage, and signs of aging.

Phenol Peels is the deepest chemical peel reaching deep into the skin and taking the longest amount of time to heal. It can be used for any of the serious skin conditions. However, because of the serious health risks associated with the phenol peels they are seldom used anymore.
All four groups of chemical peels are usually done by a dermatologist or esthetician.
