Acne is one of the most common skin diseases/ disorders worldwide. It affects around 85% of people at one point in their lives, often this it occurs at puberty due to mass hormone activity. Acne can subside by itself, but there are common treatments and remedies to help it subside, these treatment include synthetic treatments such as laser and natural remedies such as face creams, exfoliation etc.

There are many treatments available for acne these days from OTC (Over The Counter) products to prescription drugs. However, for these products, especially prescription drugs it is debatable whether these actually have a scientifically proven effect.

Topical bactericidals: There are many OTC (Over The Counter) bactericdals. These use a chemical called benzoyl peroxide. The purpose of these products is usually to treat mild to moderate acne. The gel or cream containing the benzoyl peroxide is applied, twice a day, into the pores over the affected region. Bars or soaps may also be used, and vary in strengths from 2 – 10%.

External Antibiotics: Externally applied antibiotics include treatments such as erythromycin, clindamycin, stievamycin, or tetracycline that kill the bacteria that remain in the skins blocked pores.

Hormonal treatments: In females acne can be treated by specialized treatments that affect the hormonal systems. The common combination of oestrogen/progestogen methods of hormonal contraception have a mild effect, but the antiandrogen, cyproterone, being used with an oestrogen (Diane 35) is particularly effective at reducing androgenic hormone levels.

However most of these treatments are synthetic and only affect the acne condition for a period of time, especially OTC’s that can sometimes worsen the condition.
